Trader Joe’s Extra Firm Organic Tofu – Vegan Bodybuilding Foods!

If there’s anything we know about tofu, it’s that it’s loaded with protein.

Around 70% of the calories in tofu comes from protein! Try finding any other protein source with that high of a concentration!

It’s not just any regular protein either.

Tofu is made from soybeans. Soybeans are well recognized as a complete protein source, containing an abundance of the 9 Essential Amino Acids.

This makes tofu an excellent muscle building food.

Contrary to what people tell you, soy has a ton of benefits and won’t give lower your testosterone or increase your estrogen levels like most ignorant ‘facebook certified nutritionists’ will tell you.

In many studies, soy has actually been shown to lower the risk of breast cancer.

Tofu is a staple for vegan athletes, professionals, and bodybuilders, tofu is the way to go. It’s super easy to incorporate into any dish, and tastes delicious.

At Trader Joe’s, which is one of my favorite places to shop, I often find myself scouting out the tofu, in which they carry many different kinds.

But my personal favorite is their own brand called “Trader Joe’s Extra Firm Organic Tofu.”

You’ll often find it one of the refrigerated sections depending on how your Trader Joe’s is designed and looks.

At my local Trader Joes it is in same aisle as the breads, across from the pastas. If your still not sure where to find it, just ask an employee and they’ll be

Just one block of this Trader Joe’s Extra Firm Organic Tofu has:

  • 500 calories
  • 60 grams of protein
  • 5 grams of carbohydrates
  • 25 grams of fat

This is a vegan athlete/bodybuilders dream food. Pair it with some roasted potatoes, spinach, and you have yourself the perfect bulking meal.

Coming in at only $1.99, it doesn’t get much better than this when finding a cheap plant based protein source for the family.

My parents will often purchase a few blocks of the extra firm tofu, and it’ll last us a week or two. (That’s of course if I don’t get too hungry and devour all the tofu in the fridge.)

Recipes/What You Can Make

Just like any other tofu, there’s a million different recipes out there.

I prefer using this brand to make Tofu Scramble.

  1. Just heat up some olive oil in a pan
  2. Remove tofu from package and dry with paper towel
  3. Break up the tofu with a fork
  4. Throw tofu in pan and set for a 5 minutes
  5. Add a pinch of tumeric, garlic powder, onion powder, and spices of your choice
  6. Add spinach, onions, peppers, and other topping of choice.
  7. Voila!

Once finished your tofu should come out looking like scrambled eggs! Don’t worry this is good!

Warning: Don’t put too much tumeric, otherwise your tofu will have a super bitter taste.

If you’re not a fan of the broken up tofu scramble try making very simple Grilled Breaded Tofu.

  1. Just heat up some olive oil in a pan
  2. Remove tofu from package and dry with paper towel
  3. Slice tofu into even pieces (Choose how thick you want the tofu to be)
  4. Throw into pan and add chopped garlic
  5. Grill on each side until golden brown
  6. Add breadcrumbs and grill both sides again until bread crumbs are brown
  7. Serve with soy sauce or hot sauce!

Other Trader Joe’s Tofu Brands

Trader Joe’s sells more than one kind of tofu.

Another tofu brand that Trader Joes sell is just the regular “Trader Joe’s Organic Firm Tofu.”

It’s the exact same thing as the ‘extra firm’ but just has a different colored package (blue instead of red) and has less calories and protein.

The nutrition labels states this block of tofu has 450 calories and 50 grams of protein. But it retails for the exact same price of $1.99.

So why don’t you get more bang for your buck and just get the extra firm? I can’t tell much difference in the firmness anyways.

Another one of my favorites is “Trader Joe’s Super Firm Organic Tofu.”

If you thought your tofu had a high amount of protein, try this one.

Comes in at a whopping 70 grams of protein and 650 calories per package/block.

The downside to this tofu is that it’s way too firm. It’s pretty difficult to cut, and almost seems as if it’s too dense. I tried making scrambled tofu with this one, and it was very difficult to mash up with a fork.

It still tastes like normal tofu, just but much firmer and harder to chew, not that that’s a bad thing.

It retails for $2.49. A little bit more expensive but you get more protein and calories for the extra 50 cents.

I like it, but it’s not as good as the “Extra Firm Organic Tofu” due to it’s super hard texture.

Possibly the tastiest brand of tofu from Trader Joe’s comes already prepared. It’s called “Trader Joe’s Sriracha Flavored Baked Tofu.”

It’s fairly expensive for what it is retailing at $3.49. It’s a small package and to be honest, you could probably make this at home within 5 minutes with some of the other brands of tofu above.

Will it be the exact same taste and texture? No, but it’ll save you money.

It’s super high in protein while retaining a low amount of calories, making it the perfect food to cut weight and lose fat.

One package of this delicious tofu has:

  • 280 Calories
  • 30 grams of protein
  • 12 grams of carbohydrates
  • 14 grams of fat

There’s also a bunch of other tofu brands that Trader Joe’s sells at their stores but I found the above brands to be the best!

Take it from me, a tofu lover!
